|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
It was difficult but satisfying. I came away well-equipped for the years ahead. I continued nursing in many areas of nursing and many areas of the country for 40 years- couldn't have asked for better.

UVA weekend activities |
|
Comments on weekend activities |
On occasions a group of student nurses and U.Va. students would get a car and go up on the "drive" picnic and enjoy the view. Free time was at a premium, so maybe a walk on grounds.

The trains behind McKim Hall. the drug store on main St., the beautiful snow on the lawn outside McKim Hall, Because we had little free time, much of it was spent on the Univ. grounds-concerts, football games, occasional party

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
1. Study took up a good bit of our free time, and if you wanted to spend that time with your boyfriend, you had to find a quiet place to do it. The cemetery there was beautiful and quiet. Yes, we did study. However, we enjoyed our quiet time too. 2. We had a winning football team. There were many happy days spent cheering them on. No, I never dated any of them (football stars). 3. Walking the grounds and [serpentarian?] wall walks. Spending time at the Rotunda and on the "green."

Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of marital status |
Again, I mentioned that the student nurses were the only females on the campus- also, they were single. Therefore, I think one's experiences could be whatever you wanted and could get away with (if that was your desire).

Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
|
Comments on preparedness |
Yes, definitely. I came away knowing I was a good nurse with a good background and knowledge and experience. It sent me on a road of enjoyment and fulfillment in many areas of my life.
|
Most significant post-UVA events |
|
Comments on most significant event |
Most events were good ones. Accepting work in various fields of nursing and various parts of the country. For instance, if I had not come to Fl. to be near my ill parents I would never have worked for Eastern Airlines, never met my husband, never have the wonderful children and family I have. If I had never gone to Alaska to work, I would never have received all the blessings I did there.

Personal factors that affected professional life |
|
Comments on personal factors |
The unexplained death of my spouse (age 46), left with 4 teenagers to raise and support. Although I had worked over the years it was the fact that my and my family's needs were able to be met by my professional life. Not only financially, but the hours needed to be with my children were provided. My professional life was affected but enhanced by this.
|
Other factors affecting life after the university |
|
Comments on other factors |
1. Getting polio at age 21, we didn't know the pt. had it until her autopsy was done. 2. Getting "rat fever" while working in cancer research. 3. Becoming totally blind. 4. Learning how to live with post polio syndrome. 5. being blessed by 4 wonderful children, still today.

Many times- overworked and underpaid. For many years nurses worked long hours for little pay. There was no such thing as retirement plans, health insurance, holiday or birth time off, savings plans, etc.

I think the years spent at U.Va. were some of the most wonderful one could have. There were fun times, growing time, learning times, preparing for the future times, hard times and all types of experiences. I am and will always be grateful for and proud of the time I spent there.
Because we student nurses were few in those days, many of us have kept in contact over the years. We've shared marriages, children, being born and some dying, illnesses and accidents, good times and bad. Even now as we are getting on in years, it is so great to continue sharing our daily experiences. Even our aches and pains. My time at U.Va. was a highlight in my life. I shall always be grateful for it. Needless to say, it made me a good (great) nurse, a good wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor. Thank you U.Va.
