Why did you choose UVA? |
Comments on choice to attend UVA |
A doctor friend had attended U.Va. and declared that was where I was to go.
How did you finance UVA? |
Comments on financing |
The Cadet Nursing Program was in effect. It paid for everything and even gave us an allowance.
Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)? |
Comments on choice of concentration |
I wanted to be either a teacher or a nurse-probably chose nursing because of my mother and also my desire to help people.
Description of UVA classroom experiences |
Comments on classroom experiences |
Very strict discipline- very difficult- but well worth it. Long hours of study-classes and work in hospital- one did not come to U.Va. in those days to play.
Description of UVA professor interactions |
Comments on professor interactions |
As I have written, they were very strict but they were fair and "reachable" when you needed help-very hard on you when you messed up.
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
Comments on life impact |
My nursing arts instructor, Virginia Mayo. Her husband, a doctor, was with the Univ. medical unit in Europe during WWII. One of her favorite expressions was "familiarity breeds contempt"-she wasn't familiar with us, but she was fair and willing to help-but you had to mean business with her! I really appreciated that lady.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
Comments on memorable educational experience |
I have never been sorry I attended U.Va. It was after I left the Univ. and worked as an RN in other hospitals that I realized what a superior education I had been given and I have always been grateful for that. It was very good.

We had very few weekends off as student nurses, but I made many friends from all areas of the Univ. and we are still close friends to this day.

Memories of Charlottesville |
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
It was so beautiful- at all changes of season, but especially Spring and Fall. It was so small then, we could walk through the grounds, and be in the woods in a short time.
Did you feel part of UVA community? |
Did you feel part of community? |
Incidents that caused these community feelings |
In my day the nursing school did not seem to be so much a part, but when I visited a few years ago I felt that had changed for the better.
Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
Most Universities, because of size, can be very impersonal. But I love people and I met so many people at U.Va. that I will never forget- doctors, patients, students. It seems to me it was a "gentler, kinder" world in those days. In spite of growing up in Southern Va which had its prejudices, I have always had good experiences with black people and though they were segregated in the hospital in our time, they were by far our favorite patients.

Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
As already written, I love people - color of skin or ethinc backgound means nothing to me. What matters is what kind of people are they on the inside. I had good experiences- in the end, all any of have to do is follow the golden rule and we will all do well.
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
I received a superior educationin the School of Nursing -it really showed when I worked with nurses who came from other schools- no comparison. I pray the Univ. will never lower it's standards.
Most significant post-UVA events |
Comments on most significant event |
My marriage to an Opthamologist and raising 5 children.
Personal factors that affected professional life |
Comments on personal factors |
I didn't work as an RN after I married.
Other factors affecting life after the university |
Comments on other factors |
We were constantly reminded that our only reason for being a part of the hospital was the patient. We were taught respect for every life-I'm afraid we lost that respect what with abortion and "mercy killing" that value has greatly declined.

Additional comments |
The present admin. in Washington is just a mirror of how the standards of decency and morality-honesty, integrity, have almost disappeared from our national life. Moral relativism has been taught in our school for years. It is an abyss and leaves nothing to hang on to. No wonder our young people take their lives. I pray the Univ. will not go by the questionable polls of public opinion-which change with the wind. But will maintain high standards of behavior and effort from their staff and students and become an answer to the problem of this nation and not a part of the problem. Thanks for letting me get on my soap box.
