Mostly we were grateful WWII ended just as we entered nursing school. The transition from military to civilian economy and society were prominent concerns.

There were many-Miss Beasley telling us "there is no job so lowly that it can't be done with dignity, as long as it is honest." The special spirit among staff and patients in the hospital at Christmas time.

Although I'd known many black people as I grew up, it wasn't until I worked many weeks on C ward (colored women's) and became their servant that I found out there really isn't a great deal of difference between us.

Yes, although I did not practice very long professionally, my nursing background had prepared me for my role as nurturer and caregiver to many family members, and what mother doesn't need nursing skils?
