Why did you choose UVA? |
|
Comments on choice to attend UVA |
I wanted to become a nurse, and I wanted to attend a well-known nursing school. WVU didn't offer such a program then, and I chose U.Va. since it was a well known hospital.

Description of UVA classroom experiences |
|
Comments on classroom experiences |
Difficult, but challenging. Beyond anything I had ever known about the human body. I liked my teachers for the most part and did well in class.
|
Description of UVA professor interactions |
|
Comments on professor interactions |
Very little interaction ouside the classroom. Inside they were always willing to give help. The medical doctors were more inaccessible and eager to be on their way.

Who impacted your life at UVA? |
|
Comments on life impact |
housemothers Miss Walker (forgot first name) Miss Roy Beasley head nurses on various wards and floors my classmates I got along well with my supervisory nurses, and learned much from them. They were quite firm and demanded respect and cooperation. Classes were with my own class, and we studied together and were friends. On the floors in the hospital, there were girls from all classes, and those from higher classes had more authority and we respected that.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
It was a time of learning and a pleasant one for the most part. There were more times of feeling down, particularly after working in the hospital for several hours, then having a particularly difficult class with exams. However, that is school- it is not always pleasant.
|
UVA weekend activities |
|
Comments on weekend activities |
This was war time in the beginning, and you spent your weekends working and at the Univ. We had only 1 day off each week, and sometimes classes on that day. I lived too far away to go home. It was a time to wash clothes, clean the room, write letters. etc.
|
UVA extra-curricular organizations |
|
Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
There was no opprtunity to participate in an extra-curricular activity or at least we did not know of any. We did go to church if we weren't working in the hospital.

The war. When my friends would be coming home and who would be coming home. I don't remember of any interest particularly in issues at home or in the city of Charlottesville.

I became accustomed to living in a dorm while in college, so that it wasn't a big adjustment for me. There was a feeling of safety there and it was nice to have housemothers around.

Comments on Charlottesville memories |
It was a beautiful place and I loved Charlottesville. I loved the history and the buildings. When my parents came to visit we stayed in a hotel downtown, and visited historic places.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
There was a beautiful snowfall one winter, and we went out in the snow to play just like kids. Our small amount of leisure then and it was small, was spent walking downtown, going to a movie, eating at a nearby restaurant called "the Griddle" Paul at corner drug store, the book store, seeing perhaps a football game when football resumed, and a few baseball games.

Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
|
Comments on preparedness |
Definitely. My working with children and the elderly prepared me to have knowledge to care for my 2 children and for the neighborhood children who seemed to gather at our house. We had some elderly neighbors who need nursing care and they never failed to call on me to help them. This wasn't a dreaded chore, but a very tiring one at times. I felt I had made a contribution to my little neighborhood.
