I taught nursing for 40 years. I always though that my pay was less than the male's salary, doing the same job. I felt that my Va state retirement is less than it should be.

Additional comments |
I am referring to 2 schools at U.Va. First, diploma program nursing 1943-46. Member of US cadet nursing corps. I didn't go home for 6 months because we didn't have time off. Only an am 6 hours or a pm 6 hours a week, no one believes this, but it is true. The first year we were either on duty or in the classroom from 7 am until 7 pm. The wards and private floors were staffed with students. Senior students were in charge, nurses on a lot of floors. The 8th evacuation unit had taken a lot of doctors and nurses from the staff. I felt that we were really used for service-on the job training. We were on duty at 7, had to finish assignment and report off by 9. Classes started at 9:30 am. If we were late the dorms were locked. A lot of classes were held with med students-microbiology, anatomy, and physiology lab when I graduated in Sept, 1946. I immediately became a head nurse in the premature nursery. During this time I did not feel a part of the Univ. 1959-60- As a full time student I was only in hospital for lab. My classes were on the grounds with other UVA students. I was busy with my family, but I felt that I was a part of the UVA community. In May 1996 I returned to the Univ. and became a member of the TJ Society of the alumni for 50 years of service to UVA.
