Comments on vivid memories |
I was 17 years old when I entered U.Va. I was young, inexperienced, and my most significant experience was that of meeting people from other parts of the state and country and getting to know them on a more intimate basis. Some of whom I correspond with today.
|
Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of marital status |
I eloped while a student. Since we were not supposed to marry (and I did) my nursing director would not allow me to graduate with my class even though I had just finished my clinical and educational studies. Through the efforts of Dr. Henry Mulholand and board, I was allowed to receive my RN 6 months later.
|
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of cultural background |
I was Caucasion, Southern, and a female. Through my work experience with many blacks I learned to appreciate them as individuals and as a race. It made me ashamed of segregation as I knew it in the forties.
|
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
|
Comments on preparedness |
No. I did not receive the classroom experience that I needed to face the challenges of asserting myself. We worked for the state of Va. And were given too many responsibilities that a graduate R.N. should have had.

Comments on barriers question |
Opposition from superiors. In retrospect, I feel that I had to fight for every change that was initiated. For instance, I was doing menial chores that a secretary should have done. I did not receive compensation or benefits for major responsibilities that I had to assume.

Additional comments |
The downsize (downside?) of my career at U.Va. was that the state used us as student nurses without pay for major responsibilitie i.e. being charge nurses for evening and night shifts with little or no help. Also, I felt that I had not stood up for myself (and for getting assistance) no one in the hierarchy of nursing or administration or medical field supported me. Of course there were incidents, several, that I got moral support from the administration. However, the hospital, in my opinion, was dominated by physicians. I do thank the administration for paying for my classes in continuing education to further my educational opportunities. However, there was not a clinical developer to assist me (or others) in our professional endeavors to better ourselves. Our evaluations were based on the same ones given to secretaries, and they meant little.
