Description of UVA classroom experiences |
|
Comments on classroom experiences |
Classroom work challenging-hours of work as student often long and demanding-hospital was staffed by students except for supervisory and some head nurse positions. Again, challenging.

Description of UVA professor interactions |
|
Comments on professor interactions |
Instructors always very professional. Very little interactions on personal level until college requirements met at U.Va.- in School of Nursing a closer contact was made with instructors and professors.

Who impacted your life at UVA? |
|
Comments on life impact |
Miss Cover-anatomy instructor-her professionalism and command of her subject.
Miss Roy Beazley- Nursing Arts instructor, same as Miss Cover.
Enjoyed biology profs. since I lacked that subject in high school. In nursing school sometimes my years of working in hospital almost put me on a par with instructors a few were so far ahead in knowledge that I was glad to learn from them.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
Lasting friendships with classmates. Our entering class was small, and we got to know each other well. As a 45 year old I often felt I was attending class with my children, but learned to "keep quiet" when their language sounded trite and sometimes vulgar to my ears.

Comments on weekend activities |
Worked mostly- often split shifts or evenings or nights. Went home on rare ones off. Since I was married, I kept house, attended church, and studied.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
I find it hard to tag a special memory since most of them that left a lasting impression happened to me as a nurse at U.Va. rather than a student. ER experiences, for one, attending lectures given by visiting doctors, caring for ill and dying patients, assisting and teaching nursing students and med students when they rotated through my areas.

Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of cultural background |
I think my experiences on the farm helped me through some of my experiences as a student nurse in diploma program. I was also used to working. I worked part-time at Madison College also.
|
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
|
Comments on preparedness |
Provided a background as RN & gave me active employment. B.S. in nursing did not provide promotional opportunities. I was already supervisor position when I went back to school. However, I met a personal goal before I was 50!

Additional comments |
At no point in my life as a student did I feel any discrimination, or problems relating to my sex. Perhaps as a student in diploma program I was too young to realize our education was bought at a cost by having to work for hospital. We often worked nights, but still had to attend classes as scheduled. As an older student in the 70's I realized going to school was my own decision, and to earn a BS in nursing, a personal goal. Community involvement: In 1984 my husband and I contacted friends and relatives and collected enough money to furnish and decorate a room in the Healthstone House (Ronald McDonald) 110 13th St. NW Charlottesville. In 1987 the same house was slated to be demolished. Our daughter contacted every dept. in the city hoping through a conservation organization that the house could be saved. I went to a city council meeting also asking if it could be saved. At that meeting, Prof. Wm Harris asked if the house could be moved. Through negotiations with Mr. Huja, and Mr. Schultz, Mr. Schultz purchased the house from University Baptist Church and moved the house to corner of 13th and Wertland Streets. The house was built in 1924 by my husband's aunts. It was sold by his mother to Baptist Church in 1964. It is now rented by U.Va. hospital as a haven for patients and families who are being treated at U.Va. It's now called Alex Sawyer house, named for a hospital administrator under whom I worked.
