Prayed a lot. I joined the US cadet nurse corps which helped finance 2 yrs of schooling in return for promising to nurse for the duration of the war. I completed academic program early, then spent the last 6 mos. (of 3 yr program) at Woodrow Wilson Army Hospital.

When I entered U.Va. School of Nursing I was assigned a private room in a dorm. I had never had a private bedroom growing up. It was the most wonderful feeling to be to myself for 1-2 years. Later we shared rooms.

I feel the salary of RNs was much lower than today's, comparatively speaking. It discouraged many from staying in the field, after paying babysitters, it was hardly worthwhile working.
