Vivid UVA memories
Comments on vivid memories When I became a senior nurse we were all invited to attend a dance at the Rotunda and we drew a name of a doctor on the staff. I drew Dr. Woodward's name. His hobby was raising orchids and he sent me a spray to wear. I was so thrilled and I remember during the evening we all danced the Va. Reel in the Rotunda.

Additional comments 3 months after adm. to nursing school, WWII erupted. The RNs were sent overseas to nurse the wounded GI's. It changed everything-we worked very very hard to fill in the gaps. When I remember that penicillin wasn't even discovered, I wonder how we did it. The doctors were wonderful, taught us and helped us so much as did our teachers and head nurses. We (student nurses) were really protected. We had to sign in and out, we were chaperoned at the parties at frat houses. It was strict, but we felt safe. When we had night duty we were given a thermos of coffee each night because there was no one to relieve us for a break. We met on a pavillion and had a prayer before we went on duty. The drug store (Chancellor's) across the street was where we all met when we could and talked and drank Coca-Cola-or Anderson's Bookstore when we had some money. We had a lot of T.B. patients and the chest doctors did a lot of surgery-thoracoplasty and thoracotomy.
