Additional comments |
As a student, a great aticipation was to be a graduate nurse with weekends off duty. An instuctor advised "girls, if you wish to work with people you must stay with them. They cannot be folded and put in a drawer on Friday." Each time a doctor approached a desk or wherever, the nursing student always stood up in respect. Students were not permitted to tell the patient any information concerning their condition such as temperature, blood pressure, etc. The uniform represented the stage of accomplishment. Such as the first 6 months-no cap. The capping ceremony was a special event. Senior students wore a black band on their cap. First 6 months-heavy academic work. Most all classes in McKim Hall. Then, work in hospital was arranged with classes according to our training. At this time, the threat of being sued was not an obstacle to our work in the hospital. My memory is that the instructors seemed to devote their time and energy toward making each of us individually a good nurse with medical knowledge and correct nursing ethics.
