It was much smaller near U.Va. hospital. The corner was a place all nursing students visited. Theater nearby, so we would walk. Did a lot of walking to downtown.

Times were so different, it's difficult to describe, but I will give a few examples. It seemed we were working in the hospital most of the time. There was a time to be in our rooms studying and a housemother checked to see if you were in your rooms! The Saturday night time to be back in the dorm (McKim Hall) was 11 pm. We walked most everywhere, to the movies at Paramount or Jefferson downtown. No malls. Most of us lived on small budgets and weren't big spenders. The interns usually asked us for our abc coupons each month. Cars weren't owned by any of us, and gas was rationed. We spent time in the dorms with classmates and guess we made friends easily- and that was important years later as we kept in touch through the years. There were 13 who returned for the Jefferson Society celebration out of 39. Working hours were assigned by the head nurses and usually split hours: 7-11am and back at 3-7pm or some 8 hour period of time. A very small room for a library in McKim, so one often waited on getting to doing extra reading for an assignment of articles. It was crowded. The seniors got to go ahead of new students-had to hold open the doors. This was especially hard if one was trying to get breakfast and to the line- up at the nursing director's office by 6:50 am. We had wonderful nursing instructors who seemed dedicated to their profession and to students. I know I had a great experience at U.Va. hospital and am proud to be a graduate of the School of Nursing. It was a hands on time in caring for the ill.
