Additional comments When I was working at UVA, looking back, the hospital was rather primitive by today's standards. It was, looking back, more famous for the good nursing care, good equipment, etc. When I was there there was 1 ER. We boiled syringes and needles (sharpening them before this), washed and patched rubber gloves, and reused them. The I.V. solution was made up in a solution room and poured into the bottles hooked up to a long straight needle in patient's arm. First no penicillin, few medicines, boiling water in a spoon and dropping in a tablet to give a pain hypo. I remember the first miracle of penicillin on a little girl on my floor. She was dying with [Staph?] blood infection and her MD wrote to the Army and got a limited amount. We had to reconstitute it, give 1 m. every 3 hrs and sign every dose as if it were a narcotic. After I was at home 18 yrs and returned to nursing I could not believe the wonderful changes. All the disposables and meds. A lot of the patients were in beds in hallways with cloth screens around them. In the basement the wards were cold, damp, mostly with concrete floors. I wonder how anyone recovered. Worst of all, the patients were segregated racially.
