My aunt Pauline Johnson graduated from nursing school and I admired her.
|
How did you finance UVA? |

Comments on financing |
It cost $100.00 for uniforms, books, and breakage fee for 1st year. My father didn't want me to go away and refused to give me the money, I borrowed it.
|

When my mother was ill and died, I wanted to be like the nurses who took care of her.

The classes were hard particularly if you worked night duty and had to stay up to go to class. The teachers were excellent.

Miss Josephine McLeod, superintendent of nurses, was formidable, but when she was driving to my home town for a visit, she took me and a class member along.
|
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
|
Comments on life impact |
Miss Josephine McLeod-on the first day of classes she called the roll of 73 students alphabetically without a roll book.
Miss Ruth Beery was our main instructor. She required good performances and she was fair to all students.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
I loved everything about it, we worked very hard but the experiences we shared with our classmates were wonderful. The interns and residents were our friends and later our dates-the school dances were fun. Our educational experiences included scrubbing for all doctors in OR. We spent time on each service and were put in charge of smaller wards as seniors.
|
UVA weekend activities |
|
Comments on weekend activities |
We worked many weekends. The Rector of the Episcopal Church had early communion service for those who wanted to come. He was our chaplain later in the 8th evac. In summer we spent days off at Fry's Spring swimming.
|
UVA extra-curricular organizations |
|
Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
We didn't have any organizations at that time. We did have a choir led by a music teacher. We practiced one night a week part of the year. We sang at our commencement exercises.

Memories of Charlottesville |
|
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
After gradution when I worked private duty I never afraid to walk by myself to Wertland St anytime during the night, I loved to go to dances at the Rotunda with a chaperone seated on the level above-it was not crowded.

When I worked in the nursery one of the owner's from Chancellor's had a baby. He came over every morning to watch me care for him. From that day forward I was always treated special at the drugstore.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
When one of my friends and I worked on the colored men's ward we frequently sang while we did the back ribs each evening. People would stop in the hall to listen. On the colored women's OB ward there was a patient who had post partum psychosis. She would climb over the side rails if you weren't watching. To get her back to bed I started singing and the women would join me-the patient had a beautiful alto voice and would get back in bed with no trouble.

|
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
|
Comments on preparedness |
We were taught to work in many situations during training. When we worked in OPD in the sterilizing room [cure?] rubber for IV sets, then made up the sets. We also mixed the [D5W?] & saline solution in flasks to the sterilized. We packed trays for [lumber?] punctures, etc. mended gloves and packed them for the sterilizer.

Most significant post-UVA events |
|
Comments on most significant event |
I did private duty from 1938-1940 when I joined the 8th Evacuation Hospital. By the name we knew we would be stationed at the front. We went on maneuvers in NC to learn how to care for patients in tents. We were made part of the station compliment everywhere we were stationed (R. Beery offered our services). Part of the time we worked in dental clinics or on the wards. We were sent to [Hollaran?] Gen. Hosp. on Staten Island when our doctor went in on the invasion of N. Africa.

Personal factors that affected professional life |
|
Comments on personal factors |
The 2.5 years I spent with the 8th evac. influenced my whole life. We spent 6 monthes on Casablanca on [Anfe?] Hill across the street from where the Casablanca conference was held. Had 5 day ride through the mountains on a troop train with many tunnels. Stayed at Cape [Matifice?] across the bay from [Algiers?] awaiting orders -went on troop train to board the ship to Italy , arrived at [Salerno?] on D11-slept on ground the first night-heard in the morning our ship with our equipment had been sunk.
|
Other factors affecting life after the university |
|
Comments on other factors |
The 2 years in Italy being a part of a 750 bed mobile hospital, leaving and working in tents, was a challenge to say the least. We had fires, snow, howling winds, tents blown down, etc. I took Boyd Leavell a book to tell about it.

My husband had a stoke 4 years ago, except for someone to give him am care and someone to put him to bed, I am the caregiver.-I'm lucky I had the training I had because I know many things that make his life more bearable.
