Nursing in homes, one father sold a horse to pay me after I cured his unruly son of pneumonia, another father threatened me with a shotgun if I let his son expire. He had [peritinitis?] from a ruptured appendics. In my shock I demanded he get down and pray as he was at fault. He did.

Current employment status
Comments on employment status I'm living alone in a condo. I'm visually handicapped- legally blind from [anterior eschemic optic neuropolly?] First one eye, 2 months later-the other. I've recovered enough to read with a magnifying glass, get books on tape from state library for handicapped. Writing is difficult, as you can see, but I had to do this form slowly myself, overlook errors.
Additional comments In the thirties the hospital kept a RN call list , if we refused to call we were dropped to bottom of list. Docors and patients used list. We were expected to take a fair number of charity patients-those needing special help, but unable to pay. However, if we did our share well the doctors remembered us and called us out of line. Lots of patients unable to afford hospital fees or afraid, called nurses to their homes. During the flu epidemic we were really busy in homes nursing patients and, if nescessary, cooking for them. Once I had to milk a cow, to get milk. Another time the town at Lovington collected money to have a child with pneumonia cared for. I took the case, they put me up in a hotel as the patient lived in a 2 room cabin. Since I was successful in healing him, the attending doctor later called me to his wife's home to nurse his mother's encephalitis . She was so ill, we fed her by hanging a milk bottle with rubber tubing. One Sunday she started having breathing difficulty- I called the family doctor who was out. Then son-in-law and I gave emergency drugs. She was [?] breathing as they both arrived. Then stopped breathing. The family doctor went to tell the gathered family of her death. The son-in-law told me to put whisky in her gaping mouth, I did. She coughed and started breathing again. She lived another 10 years. We had good food at University especially midnight suppers when on night duty. Although we had to rise to our feet when a doctor appeared, we were treated fairly.
