Since I was a small child I always wanted to be a nurse. I worked at U.Va. as an aide in the hospital summers '58 and '59 to get some exposure to my career choice.

It was a great place to live - in fact I remained there a year to work in public health. Safe, walking was easy.

I felt very connected to U.Va., especially the hospital. My two summers working as an aide and my summer experiences in 1961 allowed me to meet many of the doctors and administrators who knew me by name.

The day of my school's senior dance was the Friday that President Kennedy was shot. I will never forget hearing the news as I had a mid-afternoon break in my public health class. I attended our dance which was the most somber social function I have ever attended at U.Va. I had experienced a part of history that before was only in a history book - Lincoln.
