McKim was hot in the summer - no air conditioning and we were often working night shift and trying to sleep the day in an oven!

Fry Springs Beach Club was free to nursing students in the summer for swimming but there was no way to get there except walk down the railroad tracks.

Hospital community. Working with nurses and physicians at the hospital made me feel a part of their community.
We had very little contact with the rest of the University and the feeling in general was that we were not part of the University itself.

On my first day in the hospital, I was assigned to care for a patient and when I went to the room, the patient was dead. Fortunately, this did not represent my general experience at U.Va. or in nursing.

Developed Rheumatic Arthritis when age 35 which curtailed a nursing career in a traditional manner and led to early retirement due to disability.
