Memories of Charlottesville |
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
Very rural area. From "another world" to me especially up in mountain areas, segregated.

Did you feel part of UVA community? |
Did you feel part of community? |
Incidents that caused these community feelings |
We were not part of the community then - nursing was very hospital based. We only took one course on the grounds - it was at night. We rarely saw other students except at off campus functions or social events. Usually the students preferred to date other women's colleges. Nursing was not held in high respect.

Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
The first Rotunda Ball was held and several friends and I convinced some JAG school guys to take us since they had dress uniforms and did not need to rent a tux. It was a night of magic even though I couldn't remember who I was with. I truly fell in love with the Rotunda and grounds that night of beauty. The physical beauty of U.Va. was what has remained with me the most after my education which I consider the best I could have gotten anywhere.

Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
Absolutely. The nursing program I was in combined the best of the older 3 year RN course with the newer BSN program. Compared to my experiences with other programs after graduation including a brief role as instructor in a nursing school my education was all I needed.
Most significant post-UVA events |
Comments on most significant event |
Feminist movement - changed the world I was expected to live in - as I grew up in one expectation for a woman and then forced to live in another.
Vietnam War and Watergate made me question our leaders as well as made me more aware of political events.
Personal factors that affected professional life |
Comments on personal factors |
My husband refused to allow me to continue in my nursing career due to fear of liability and corporate USA's looking down on working wives then. My divorce at 45 led to a renewal of my love for nursing and a satisfactory career ladder.
