Why did you choose UVA? |
Comments on choice to attend UVA |
Excellent reputation of the nursing program. I was accepted at other universities with a 5 year degree program, but the 4 year program which included summers was a more appealing length.
How did you finance UVA? |
Comments on financing |
The nursing program cost was quite reasonable as all students had to work the equivalent of 2 weekends/month which reduced total tuition.
Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)? |
Comments on choice of concentration |
Lifelong interest in nursing and did volunteer work in high school.

Very professional.
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
Comments on life impact |
Selected nursing professors because of their specialty area and the student presidents of the various colleges I was able to meet and work with on the Honor committee. As part of the Honor Committtee I was able to share a common experience with others in carrying out a very important part of University life - the Honor Code.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
Comments on memorable educational experience |
High expectations for performance.
UVA weekend activities |
Comments on weekend activities |
Nursing students had to work one Saturday, one Sunday and one Saturday and Sunday combined throughout the school year, so much of my time was spent working or studying - I did attend football and basketball games regularly and fraternity parties and related celebrations.
UVA extra-curricular organizations |
Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
I was President of my class in my juior year and Student Government President (of Nursing School) my senior year. As Student Government Pres. I was able to be on the University Honor Committee which was a most significant experience for me personally.
Important local, state, national, and international issues while at UVA |
Comments on important issues |
J.F. Kennedy was President and I was particularly interested in national issues related to welfare and racial issues as well as international issues such as the Cuban Crisis and the U.S. participation in Vietnam. Vietnam was a big issue. JFK was assassinated while I was a senior at U.Va.

Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
When I was in the College of Nursing, you were not "allowed" to be married, although several of my classmates were married my senior year. I think it would have been more difficult to be married and to try to keep up with the weekend work schedule we had to do.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
I don't think it had any effect in the college of nursing. There was no cultural diversity among our class - or the prior year's class or incoming class. Had I been from a different background, it may have had a negative impact, but I really do not know that for certain.
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
I was well prepared to work in any setting in the field of nursing. I worked in 3 very different health care areas in various areas of the country after I graduated and was always able to adapt and to succeed in all situations.
Most significant post-UVA events |
Comments on most significant event |
My first husband died suddenly (accident) when I was 28 years old with 2 young children. Also I had moved to a small town in Florida prior to his death and as there were no good health care facilities, I went into education and began teaching.

When my husband died, I went back to school and got my Masters so I could go into public school administration.

Additional comments |
Given the era in which I attended the University, I am really glad it was not co-ed at that time. There was a sense of tradition that was enhanced because it was not co-ed. I think the University has been able to transition to co-ed without losing any tradition - which was no small feat!!
When I was at U.Va. the students (male) all wore coats and tie to class. It was most impressive! The main thing I remember is the Honor Code and how that permeated the entire campus and student body in a very positive way.
