Why did you choose UVA? |
|
Comments on choice to attend UVA |
It was well known within our family for its medical facility and was geographically close to my mother's relatives in Nelson Co. Both of these factors helped me convince my mother that I would be well educated and safe at U.Va.
|
How did you finance UVA? |
|
Comments on financing |
1st year - parents
2nd and 3rd year - Scholarship and "working for pay" at the hospital during my free time.
|
Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)? |
|
Comments on choice of concentration |
Career choices for women were much more limited then. I very much enjoyed helping people and found all things medical of great interest. The smell and activity in a hospital were like magic. I also felt it would be good knowledge to have in raising my family and employment was virtually guaranteed.

Description of UVA classroom experiences |
|
Comments on classroom experiences |
It was like being in a girl's school in the middle of a boy's school - we had the advantages of the University but small classes (just those in my class - never more than 42) and close attention from our instructors; and the bonding with classmates as we learned and worked together was invaluable. The faculty was small and had office space in McKim Hall where we lived so they were always available.
|
Description of UVA professor interactions |
|
Comments on professor interactions |
I always felt they were very well educated, interested in me and thoroughly enjoyed what they were doing. They were always very professional and demanded the best from us in the classroom but especially in patient care. I realize now that some of them were very young and recently graduated but at the time they seemed very wise and mature and had our respect. They treated us as professional young women and not like the teenagers we were.

Who impacted your life at UVA? |
|
Comments on life impact |
1. Betty Norris - OB instructor
2. Margie Howell - Psychiatry instructor
3. Dorothy Stokes - U.Va. Grad - head nurse
4. Pat Trussell - Evening nursing supervisor
5. Housemothers at McKim Hall
These people were always available to and interested not only in our academic welfare but our personal welfare. 1-4 were superb nurses - and shoulders to cry on. Housemothers provided the security blanket we left at home.

Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
Lutheran Student Ministry at St. Mark Church - Participation was limited as the group was small, the church several miles away (no U.Va. Transit then) and we worked so many evenings and weekends. More or less a support group.

Comments on likes and dislikes |
Our whole class was housed on the same floor - a lot of "sisters" some you cared for more than others but it was a great situation for learning to get along with a wide variety of personalities from many different backgrounds and parts of U.S. Definitely a learning experience that I wouldn't trade.

Memories of Charlottesville |
|
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
Did not know much about the surrounding area as our transportation was bascially where we could walk and we did that a lot. Movies and shopping dowtown, the merchants and town folk were always kind. We felt safe, perhaps walking a little faster on Vinegar Hill but not hesitating to go where we wished.
|
Did you feel part of UVA community? |
|
Did you feel part of community? |
|
Incidents that caused these community feelings |
We felt very much an important part of the medical community. But as that was physically located on the edge of the main grounds and having no classes outside of McKim we knew very little of what went on either class or faculty wise or socially, concerts, etc. in the University proper.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
The first day we were in school a group of 6-8 of us took a walk around the Lawn and main Grounds. It was very beautiful and special then, as now. But I remember our great discussions - and fear - as to whether or not we were allowed to go into any of the buildings to looks around - i.e. Cabell hall. After all it was a boy's school. That day we didn't take the chance, although of course it was O.K.

Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
|
Comments on preparedness |
I never had to really interview competitively for a job. Your diploma from U.Va. and Board scores were enough to get you a job with significant responsibility - even in other states. The responsibility that we had for patient care - by our last year we worked more than we had class - gave us great experience and maturity. At 21 I felt well prepared to assume life as an adult.

Convincing male bankers, insurance agents, etc. that I could start, develop and run a business without my husband's financial backing. My husband always believed I could do anything I wanted and female professionals gave me the chance. My business was successful and well regarded and funded in my own name and was my financial responsibility.
