Beautiful area. Townspeople very prejudiced about blacks. Remember black "friends" from hospital being thrown out of Waffle Shop - made me angry - I left - would not go back.

Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
I was single but "pinned" while I was there. I'm sure that made me feel more socially secure than many others.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
I'm not sure my answer is what you want - but being at U.Va. made me realize that by myself - without family name and tradition people still seemed to accept me. This was the first inkling I had of "self-worth." Always before I was a daughter or a sister of ___, etc. At this time I also encountered prejudice for the first time and realized I was different in that I saw people as individuals and not in "groups." (An unpopular concept at the time.)
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
I have been an RN since 1964 and except for 2 years have worked full time. Being divorced in 1969 I have "taken care of myself" in a profession I have loved and still do. Divorced - no one in my peer group at least and most women did not work - had no means of support except men.
Most significant post-UVA events |
Comments on most significant event |
Divorced - relocation.
Personal factors that affected professional life |
Comments on personal factors |
It's more the factors in the world, i.e. women's lib, Vietnam, integration, equal opportunity. For years I was a misfit, then became moderately accepted, and now in the 1990s I'm a baby boomer - single woman AARP etc. There's nothing unique anymore about my circumstances - but in the '70s and '80s I was a freak.
