Comments on classroom experiences |
Pleasant and supportive of learning overall. Occasionally there would be a professor in the college who openly expressed displeasure at women in the classroom.
Description of UVA professor interactions |
Comments on professor interactions |
Because I was 24 upon entering the University, I was mature; had a career trajectory and was focused which was helpful to the way I was perceived in the classroom and outside of it.
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
Comments on life impact |
Selected faculty in the School of Nursing and the person whom I married -- he was a great support throughout my years at the University.
Most memorable UVA educational experience |
Comments on memorable educational experience |
I remember what it was like to be in the minority -- the ratio of males to females was 27:1. I remember how awed I was by all the "smart" intelligent persons with whom I interacted. I remember the Tues, Thurs, Sat, Mon, Wed, Fri classes. I remember eating dinner at Buddy's and at the University Caf

Comments on weekend activities |
I studied; wrote papers during the day. I had dates on Friday and Saturday nights. I went home occasionally.

Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
I did not participate in extra curricular activities. After completing my papers, studying for tests, etc., I would go dancing with a professional dancer at the "Cavalier Inn," beside the railroad track on Emmett Street.

I had a private room in Mary Munford Hall which I liked; the dress codes were strict! I found the rooms I had on Minor Rd. and Mt. Lewis Rd. to be affordable and convenient.
Where were meals eaten |
Comments on meal location |
Year 1 I ate in Newcomb Hall.
Years 2 and 3 I ate mostly at Cabell Hall Basement for breakfast; dinner generally was at Buddy's Restaurant at intersections 250 and Emmet or at University Cafeteria on the Corner. Occasionally I ate at Slaon's North Wing, Barracks Rd.

Pleasantness, beauty. Occasionally I would drive to 21 curves and study in a quiet place all afternoon. I would drive to Afton Mountain and have stew at a lodge there on many Saturday afternoons.

Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
This is a clinical experience. I recall having been assigned a patient in the surgical intensive care unit who was 31 days post operative and still on the ventilator to help her breathe. I had the challenge of "weaning" her from the ventilator. I did it -- I would bring in my hair dryer, etc. shampoo her hair; order the "unheard of" milkshakes and cream cheese and olive sandwiches from Chancellor's Drugstore -- anything to distract and relax her -- she was from Tennessee and I put her on the plane home!
I often felt I could meet the challenges I was given. I liked such experiences.
Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
In year 1, I met the man I married 3 years later. I loved being single, attractive and sought after by many male students; classes were mostly males, so it challenged me to perform well.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
Coming from rural Virginia, it was somewhat of a cultural shock to be in class with so many students who had gone to prep schools, etc. However, I had much common sense -- did not drink, did not smoke and held to my high southern moral standards. I excelled because of these standards.
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
Because I have remained in academic life. I feel certain that my degrees from U.Va. have been viewed well by others.
Most significant post-UVA events |
