Why did you choose UVA? |
|
Comments on choice to attend UVA |
I had applied to a hospital school of nursing in Charlotte and when I had my physical, my family doctor (a U.Va. med school graduate) insisted I should come to U.Va. School of Nursing has a wonderful reputation.
|
How did you finance UVA? |
|
Comments on financing |
parents but the diploma nurses worked 44 hr wks and tuition was very low.
|
Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)? |
|
Comments on choice of concentration |
I really wanted to be a veternarian but NC didn't have a vet school at the same time and only sent 3 students a year to out of state schools. I had a senior advisor who assured me that in 1958 if 3 males applied a femal wouldn't make it So I chose nursing after a hospital stay.

|
Comments on classroom experiences |
I had excellent professors and my classes were small. I took some courses at night after nursing graduation + also had some great professors.
|
Description of UVA professor interactions |
|
Comments on professor interactions |
In nursing school we did see our professors on a social basis in their homes (some of them). They were very supportive.
|
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
|
Comments on life impact |
Ann Hemmings, RN--She was my ideal of a nurse and a wonderful instructor. Josephine Ludwig--Taught chemistry + pharmacology. She was a brilliant instructor who loved chemistry and wanted everyone to love it as she did. Helen Plummer--Taught anatomy and physiology. Also dedicated to her subject. A wonderful instructor. When she left U.Va. (retired) she joined the Peace Corps.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
We had excellent instructors overall but due to working 44 hr weeks and fitting studies into it all was very intense. It was hardest when working 11pm-7am = have 10-12 class and 1-4 class. I am sure I slept through many lectures.

Comments on important issues |
Segregation was the only topic. Schools were closed the year I arrived. The hospital had segregated wards and two difference cafeterias.

Comments on how interest was expressed |
I really was never involved in the Civil Rights Movement except once. A group of student nurses from VA went by bus to Miami to a convention in 1960. We had two black students with us. In NC and SC we couldn't find a place where we could eat together. So we refused t eat without them and ended up eating in a kitchen of a restaurant in SC.

Did you feel part of community? |

Incidents that caused these community feelings |
One of the plights of the nursing students was that we dated U.Va. men during the week but on the weekends they took "road trips"

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
All the students wore coats and ties. The honor system was very (underlined) strong. You could go in restaurants and etc, and at the Corner and leave coats on racks and never worry whether it would walk. As 1st yr students we had to go over to mem gym to swim one night a week. The nurses weren't allowed out of McKim in shorts so we had to don rain coats to leave McKim even in those balmy nights. The biggest event during my schooling was the "panty raids" on McKim the night a car was burned in the mad bowl to protest Dean Runk's "car policy" It was pretty scary to see hundreds of guys pouring down the hill and storming the dorm.

we had several married students in our program = that was allowed. However, if you got pregnant, there were no maternity uniforms and one of my class mates who was 8 mos pregnant worked.

I remember the cow on the Rotunda, the cow in Cabel Hall, the first time I saw the IMPs march into a frat house was sure of scary!
After graduation, during the rash of demonstrations against the war in Vietnam, one of my classmates husband's, Willie Williams (class of '62) stood guard with his rifle in front of the Rotunda to assure the flag would not be burned. Willie is now dead but I will never forget his love of country and flag.
