Patients at the hospital - I did not feel prepared for situations I was placed in during weekend, summer work which was required for room and board payback.

4 weekend days each month I worked in U.Va. Hospital to pay room, board, laundry fees. Other days were spent with my family or fiance later with husband.

Social life for nursing students with greater university was nonexistant for most. I was told that McKim Hall students were seen negatively by the "Virginia Gentlemen."

Not really. Faculty provided little direct clinical supervision during my time as a student. During clinical time we were at the mercy of the hospital nursing staff.

I was pleased to observe that women at U.Va. now seem to enjoy full acceptance and have equal standing with the gentlemen. That was my impression of my daughter's experience in 1980s.
