Most memorable UVA educational experience
Comments on memorable educational experience The textbook learning was well reinforced with actual practice on the hospital floors. I felt that even with nursing being my focus, I was given more of the sense of appreciating the liberal arts by being at the University. Thus I felt well prepared and well rounded.
UVA weekend activities
Comments on weekend activities Dating - sporting events, occasionally traveling home or to other colleges. (Often working!)
UVA extra-curricular organizations
Comments on extra-curricular organizations The Newman Center gave me a sense of belongling to a close knit group - other than just my classmates. Other University groups were not open to diploma nurses. I also had good friends at [Jack's?] fraternity.

Memories of Charlottesville
Comments on Charlottesville memories It was a small, friendly town. Most of anything we needed was at the "Corner" or a walk into the town. I never felt threatened.
Did you feel part of UVA community? Did you feel part of community?
Incidents that caused these community feelings No - diploma students weren't recognized by the University and we felt set apart. Yes - through sports, fraternity parties, etc.
Vivid UVA memories
Comments on vivid memories The first thing that comes to mind is the "riot" on Thanksgiving weekend of 1961. It was very frightening to run through the tear gas in an attempt to make McKim curfew. You were in big trouble if you were late and [you'd?] be in big trouble if an official grabbed you. We had to go through the area to return to the dorm. This probably comes to mind because it was so out of character to the rest of my time at U.Va.!
Did marital status affect UVA experiences
Comments on influence of marital status I was single and thus had all of the fun and social experiences of the usual college student.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences
Comments on influence of cultural background We were aware that as Roman Catholics we were a minority but that was more of a cultural thing of the geographic area than anything from the University.
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life?
Comments on preparedness
Most significant post-UVA events
Comments on most significant event Marriage - motherhood and my volunteer activities.
Personal factors that affected professional life
Comments on personal factors Husband and I chose a "traditional" family (he worked - I raised two children and did community volunteering. In all of my roles as a volunteer (Board member, Governor's appointee, community activist and author) I used my nursing education and the value I learned at U.Va.
Other factors affecting life after the university
Comments on other factors An assignment in Canada for my husband and me plus a good deal of interaction with people from around the globe [vice?] his work.

Do you think of yourself as a career woman?
Comments on career woman question volunteer career
Barriers faced in work and volunteering
Comments on barriers question I often found a lack of respect for a volunteer not "backed by employment." You had to work harder to prove your value. There were times when I also felt that I as a woman I again needed to prove myself in situations.

Additional comments Pride in the Honor Code is still a great part of my husband's code of ethics. We will always value the education and other experiences of our time at Virginia. We were among other students who shared goals and under instructors who had high expectations and standards. The tradition of "Mr. Jefferson" and respect for history included a respect for each other. Please note attachment B. It is a copy of my acceptance speech last year at the School of Nursing. I believe it "says it all."
