I was class president my freshman year; I was VP of the State Student Nurses Assoc. of Va. Student Council - one of the most painful memories I have was participating in an honor trial - as class pres. I had to help the young woman pack to leave.

Important local, state, national, and international issues while at UVA |
|
Comments on important issues |
None that I can recall. Probably health care issues; issues of race came up when I was VP of the student nurse group and had to plan the delegation of the national convention in Ohio. I was instructed to get off the bus (while we were in WV) first and go into the restaurant to see if they served "colored people." This is my first memory of overt anger on race issues.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
It was a wonderful time in my life. I was away from home for the first time; in love; studying to be a nurse; becoming an independent woman; making lifelong friendships with other women. I remember picnics with my love; my first experience with alcohol; the thrill of "capping" (when nursing students get their caps); my first patient dying; learning to take a stand on issues; learning to be a scholar - I loved it all!

Time tends to fade reality, but my experience was 98% positive. Being a nursing student may have been different from that of other University women.
