Parents. We were required to work 4 weekend days a month in the hospital. This paid our tuition. Small scholarship from nursing school.

Began researching careers in high school. Nursing interested me. As soon as I could work, I worked as a nurses aide during summers and some weekends.

We had few classes at the University. We had classes in the Nursing school with only fellow classmates.

We had one professor who made a real effort to socialize with our class. Other than Mrs. Betty Norris, no one made an effort to get to know us personally.

Betty Norris, Margie Howell - both taught in nursing school. Some doctors and staff nurses.

Stimulating environment, hospital seemed to practice the latest patient surgeries, etc. Some classes great, some really boring and bad - but we always had clinical classes and they were never boring - sometimes very scary experiences.

We only had 4 weekend days free of work. Went to football games, fraternity parties, concerts. And we studied.

Sorority - meetings mainly. Through sorority met other females students at U.Va. Otherwise I would not have ever met other women students at U.Va.

The medical and nursing schools were like our families. Everyone seemed to know almost everyone.

Sledding on Cafeteria trays in front of McKim Hall. We had a Wednesday night education class on the grounds. It snowed for at least 7 Wednesdays during that course.
The doctors on staff had a dance for senior nursing students. These doctors each had one nursing student that they escorted to the dance.

My nursing knowledge and clinical skills were tops when I graduated. As far as living in the real world, I was not really prepared for that.

When I went to U.Va., women were not really a part of the University life. We just accepted this and had lots of fun anyway. I probably would have flunked out, if we had been a part of University life!
