Nice place to live. Beautiful countryside. Friendly people.
Did you feel part of UVA community? |
Did you feel part of community? |
Incidents that caused these community feelings |
When walked through the grounds on my way to a class in the "upper campus" I felt very lucky to be at U.Va. I really identified with the medical community and felt we were a subset of the University.
Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
At graduation I felt immense pride in attending U.Va. I knew I had received an excellent education. My success in completing nursing at the top of my class gave me the confidence needed to be successful with my career.
Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
Not married - this had no effect. Do recall that as nursing students we felt U.Va. men would involve us in ordinary weekend activities but bring in women from other colleges for special weekends instead of us.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
When I first took nursing fundamentals (summer of 1960) the hospital was segregated. Coming from the North (N.J.) I was shocked at that. As I proceeded through the program the hospital became integrated, first on floor and then in individual rooms. Occasionally, patients asked to be moved.
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
Yes as stated earlier. My focus has been my career and I was well prepared for that.
Most significant post-UVA events |
Comments on most significant event |
All world events have influenced my personal life.
Personal factors that affected professional life |
Comments on personal factors |
My philosophy is that pateints should receive care based on need, not based on ability to pay. I never accepted treating some patients as "VIPs." To me they are all important.
Other factors affecting life after the university |
Comments on other factors |
Career opportunities, educational experiences.
