Description of UVA classroom experiences |
Comments on classroom experiences |
Excellent but limited exposure to liberal arts. Classes outside mandatory nursing curriculum were not open to diploma students.
Description of UVA professor interactions |
Comments on professor interactions |
Professors had hardly any interaction with students outside classroom or in hospital. They did not encourage students to call them at home.
Much of nursing student supervision was delegated to hospital floor supervisors and head nurses.
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
Comments on life impact |
Fellow nursing students. As above, faculty was not available and physician staff were "on a different level."

Challenge of learning to care for very ill patients. Lovely campus. Pride in my "school." Honor Code had true meaning.

Memories of Charlottesville |
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
Small town. Shopping - cultural environment limited. Attitude of students at U.Va. toward C'ville residents was not good - "townies."

Did you feel part of community? |

Incidents that caused these community feelings |
Somewhat. No choice of housing. No liberal arts classes. No social life other than dating.
Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
I recall the pleasant memory of afternoon tea each day in McKim Hall. Silver tea service was used and first years students served upperclassmen. This reflects the genteel attitude of U.Va.

Allowed to move out of dorm after marriage - last year of school.

At times I felt shy with students who were from larger cities or who had more cultural exposure than I.

Additional comments |
I recall the many long, hard hours of clinical rotation in the old hospital. We had no high tech monitors. We were taught to "see" what was happening to the patient - listen to the patient and respond appropriately. We were given responsibility for charge duty on all 3 shifts and held accountable for our judgment. Pride was instilled in each student as you advanced and earned stripes on your nursing cap. I loved my patient interactions.
