Comments on choice of concentration |
In the 1950s, the career choices for women were fairly limited (teaching, nursing, secretarial).
Description of UVA classroom experiences |
Comments on classroom experiences |
Limited strictly to the School of Nursing as U.Va. was still a men's University. Women were tolerated, but not particularly welcomed on the Grounds.
Description of UVA professor interactions |
Comments on professor interactions |
All professors, instructors were female and nurses. Curriculum was very rigid, all courses mandatory with no electives.
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
Comments on life impact |
Nursing professors and instructors because they were only faculty we had contact with.
Most memorable UVA educational experience |
Comments on memorable educational experience |
Strictly limited to the School of Nursing. I attended cultural events on campus when time/schedule permitted, which was rare. Nursing students had both classroom and clinical training in hospital. Clinical training included weekends, holidays, rotating shifts.
UVA weekend activities |
Comments on weekend activities |
Mandatory clinical training/working in hospital. Had 1 free weekend (Sat. and Sun.) per month. Otherwise schedules to work 6 days per week. One weekend a month mandatory working both Sat. and Sun.
UVA extra-curricular organizations |
Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
None - mandatory schedule for classroom and clinical training left little time or energy.

Nursing dormitory, McKim Hall, was attached to hospital. It was convenient location and afforded single room. Provided safety for various shifts for working. All classes also held in McKim Hall.

Memories of Charlottesville |
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
Lovely homes, buildings, nicely landscaped. Grouds were beautifully landscaped as I frequently walked all over nearby neighborhoods for exercise and recreation. Sports were not available to women so recreation and exercise was extremely limited.
Did you feel part of UVA community? |
Did you feel part of community? |
Incidents that caused these community feelings |
It was a men's University. Women were admitted as upperclassmen (3 or 4 years). No sports programs/activities for women. Male students tolerated nursing students so long as we stayed on our turf McKim Hall and hospital area.
Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
In spite of above practices, in free time I wandered all over the Grounds - always inspired by the sense of history and architectural beauty; feeling the "presence" of Mr. Jefferson. I especially enjoyed the beauty and quiet solitude of the multiple flower gardens, the unique designs of the garden gates and the flowers and trees in each garden.
Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
I married 3 days prior to graduation - so it really had no impact upon studies or activities.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
Probably none.
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
Definitely. I have had a successful and rewarding career in nursing and have always felt completely competent and well prepared for jobs because of a solid nursing education and clinical training from such a well respected university.
Most significant post-UVA events |
Comments on most significant event |

Comments on barriers question |
I don't think in terms of barriers, rather see things as challenges or opportunities. A positive attitude is much more productive and rewarding.

Additional comments |
Although I live 5000 miles from U.Va. for past 30 years, I visit family in Virginia on annual basis and usually return to U.Va. to stroll the Grounds. I have a personal need to feel Mr. Jefferson's "presence" - to reconnect to my roots. It is a time to enjoy the architecture, wander through new buildings and gardens (new Law School and Gardens in 9/97), to see familiar sights and stay in touch with my earlier life and educational experience. Thanks for opportunity to share my thoughts, feelings and experiences of some of best years of my life. Best wishes for the success of your project.
