Comments on college experiences |
Why did you choose UVA? |
Comments on choice to attend UVA |
Because it was fairly close to home. Cost was within our family limits. Did not want to go to MCV.
How did you finance UVA? |
Comments on financing |
Small scholarship; parents' help and I worked myself, each summer in high school.
Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)? |
Comments on choice of concentration |
Frankly because of parental pressure and because I wanted a professional career that would earn money. Also I wanted to follow a musical career at Indiana University but no money for that program.

UVA extra-curricular organizations |

Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
Student government. Otherwise I studied - I could not "play" and keep good grades. Grades were more important to me.
Important local, state, national, and international issues while at UVA |
Comments on important issues |
Within the University - I was very annoyed that we nurses were not allowed graduation on the Lawn as others were. (I was not into local issues, city, state, etc.)
How interest in issues was expressed |

I spoke out but it only brought irritation from the Dean of Nursing.

Did you feel part of UVA community? |
Did you feel part of community? |
Incidents that caused these community feelings |
We were so isolated; overloaded with a tough workload either in academic or hospital duty. We spent too many hours in hospital service.
Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
A classmate and I were responsible for some 33+ patients on a unit as a 2nd year student. All I can remember is work in the hospital. There was little time for play. I listened to classical music and studied.
Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
None - I was married after graduation.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
White/female - that was the way the nursing classes were in 1958-1961.
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
It taught me more of what I already knew - "work comes before play."
Most significant post-UVA events |
Comments on most significant event |
The awareness after finishing - that we were rudely treated by so many of the physicians. I sought a way to free myself of that behavior.
Personal factors that affected professional life |
Comments on personal factors |
My answer to #36 affected my "person." Therefore, I went back to school to earn a BA and MA in counseling. I have a license to practice independently. The reason I did this is because physicians had made much of my nursing life tense. And I was a good nurse.
Other factors affecting life after the university |
Comments on other factors |
I've been married 36 years, raised 4 responsible children and worked in the evening when my husband could be with the children.
I learned to juggle!

Additional comments |
College was the second best time in my life. The friendships found at U.Va. were lasting and our class is still close. We continue a class letter to date. I really applied myself to academics while there and did little in the way of other activities. I was not a "drinker" so frat parties, etc., were not in my life. Others who played in the Richmond Symphony filled my spare" time. I wish I could be given the chance to walk the Lawn in graduation and feel what other U.Va. grads felt. Our graduation was not anything like now on the Lawn.
