Description of UVA professor interactions |

Good, but not always understanding of the student's needs - too much emphasis on academics and less on life experiences - such as caring for dying.

Patients taught me real life and I appreciated their courage during illness.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
I remember working at the hospital Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. This is when I understood the real need for caring about people and having to sacrifice myself to their needs. It was a moving experience that I cherish always.
|
Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of marital status |
I dated my fiance and was married 1 year before graduating in Spring 1960. This gave me purpose and determination to complete my degree.
|
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of cultural background |
Our class was 100% white Americans. I don't think that was a natural cross section of American students! I would have preferred more cosmopolitan racial and ethnic diversity.
|
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
|
Comments on preparedness |
In a limited way - lots of theory, the why's behind how to do things. But I yearned for more interpersonal experiences both to feel more confident about nursing and to learn more about how to handle my own emotions better.
|
Most significant post-UVA events |
|
Comments on most significant event |
Caring 23 years for my husband as a heart patient. Raising 2 boys as a single parent (age 14,15). Loss of my only sibling (sister) to breast cancer. Learning to stand tall all alone.

Raising a family. I did not work outside the home until boys were in college.
|
Other factors affecting life after the university |
|
Comments on other factors |
I retreated from conventional nursing. I am now growing organic vegetables for restaurants and learning to be a massge therapist.

Either overqualified or too old to return to nursing. Pyschologically I believe in alternative healing instead of conventional medications, surgical intervention.

Additional comments |
Medical Schools and Nursing programs should become more at ease and teach approaches to healing other than the conventional. Help the students explore nutrition - herbal healing, energy and vibrational healing.
I believe a review of Eastern medicine and Aryvedic (ancient Indian) medicine along with native Indian shaman and other cultures would broaden the student's outlook. I recall we studied first European history of medicine as if the rest of the world didn't even exist!
We now live globally and should not be limited to the ideas of the state of Virginia, East Coast or even U.S. medicine. Prepare new students to accept Asians, Russians, Africans, Hispanics and to understand their cultures.
