Description of UVA classroom experiences |
|
Comments on classroom experiences |
Mostly I recall classrooms were in the basement of McKim. Some instructors were excellent, most treated students as individuals and they got to know us.
|
Description of UVA professor interactions |
|
Comments on professor interactions |
Friendly but more professional than they are now. I think students in past years had more respect for faculty members. Some of my fondest memories are chats and the tea we had every afternoon at 4 P.M. in the McKim living room. That was a wonderful tradition!
|
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
|
Comments on life impact |
Dr. Bice's wife, now deceased - very kind and encouraging person. Made me want to do well.
Mary Jane Morris, also now deceased - friendly, kind but also no nonsense in classroom. A motivator.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
The lifelong friends I made there. Great dorm life. The actual nursing in the hospital and how proud I was to be there. Sitting in the dreary McKim library reading America Journal of Nursing (assignments). Enjoying the Corner (I still do!) There was dissention between the diploma and degree students and even the docs preferred the diploma students as they had more hospital experience.

UVA weekend activities |
|
Comments on weekend activities |
Often working as part of student nurse supervisors. Visited home with my family. Some dating, but not a lot as we did not mix with the rest of the students except in human growth and development.
|
UVA extra-curricular organizations |
|
Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
Not much time for extra-curricular organizations. I'm not even aware that we would have been welcomed or included in the U.Va. general activities except for mixers.

Terrible to say, but none. My world was the hospital and the School of Nursing and dating.

Memories of Charlottesville |
|
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
I loved it and still do. The Corner and the White Spot's pie. You felt safe out and about in town. I loved going up to Skyline Drive hiking - beautiful scenery. Coffee was 10 cents at the Diner near the Corner. The impressive Rotunda and lawn.

Did you feel part of UVA community? |
|
Did you feel part of community? |
|
Incidents that caused these community feelings |
Going to school 2 years there, graduating with all the students (a thrill), attending football games. then I worked there later (U.Va. Hospital). I honestly did not feel accepted by the whole University as a student but that did not bother me as I loved what I was doing.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
One night as a senior nursing student I was in charge of a large unit of surgical patients. My recollection is that there was an RN supervisor in the house, but I only had LPN's and aides. There were several emergencies which I handled and was commended for later. I thought I really had "arrived." Probably this does not represent my general experience except I was focused on my career throughout and derived great satisfaction practicing what I had learned.

Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of marital status |
I did not marry until 2 years after graduation.
|
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of cultural background |
Not at all. We were all Caucasian Americans.
|
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
|
Comments on preparedness |
I felt as if I had a solid BSN though I laced the experience in the hospital that the diploma students had. I believe I caught up quickly with post grad work.

Most significant post-UVA events |

Comments on most significant event |
Meeting the man (at U.Va.) I married 36 years ago. Being a nurse: I taught in schools of nursing for 3 years, worked in a private girls schools. Receiving a stipend from NIMH to return to U.Va. for a Master's degree which changed my options significantly for employment and salary. Having 3 wonderful children. My Dad just died.
|
Personal factors that affected professional life |
|
Comments on personal factors |
I was not employed 6 years during which time I had our 3 children. When my husband had a heart attack I reacted by going to grad school in case I had to support the family (had though about returning to school for years, but his illness was the motivator). Worked various shifts in hospitals to try to be with the kids more.

I am proud to be a graduate of the University of Virginia. I believe that has helped in each job I have applied for.
Will you be sharing your results? I'd be interested because I know how different it is for women at the University now compared to 1950s.
