Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)? |
Comments on choice of concentration |
At age 15 when I was a girl scout nurses aid at George Washington Univ. Hospital I discovered how much I was drawn to the nursing profession.

Description of UVA classroom experiences |
Comments on classroom experiences |
Challenging, enlightening and thought provoking.
Description of UVA professor interactions |
Comments on professor interactions |
Our interactions were very friendly inside and outside the classroom. We fraternized regularly at school teas and occasionally would interact at a social club (Fry Springs) while on a date.
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
Comments on life impact |
Several of my nursing instructors were most enthusiastic and supportive. At that time, Dean Tyson was such a fine leader and an encouraging friend to all who applied themselves. I still remember the names of the special instructors, including Zula Mae Baber, Mary Jane Morris, Ann Hemmings, Betty Norris, and Mrs. Zyzneiski.
Most memorable UVA educational experience |
Comments on memorable educational experience |
My years studying nursing were full of classes and a lot of practical hospital experience. The hours of work were demanding, but there was enough time for social experiences in order to balance the social life. I enjoyed my learning experiences and the social life.
UVA weekend activities |
Comments on weekend activities |
Many of the weekends were spent working at the Univ. Hospital. I remember missing a number of football games. I socialized with my fellow sorority sisters or would have a date. Occasionally, I would visit friends at another school or visit home.
UVA extra-curricular organizations |
Comments on extra-curricular organizations |
I was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and often participated in projects that we had with the alumni. This experience was a very healthy one as it allowed me to interact with people other than nursing and medical students.

Memories of Charlottesville |
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
It was a town of medium size; easy to get around in and was most beautiful.
Did you feel part of UVA community? |
Did you feel part of community? |
Incidents that caused these community feelings |
I met numerous students through my sorority, church, and in classes related to education, held away from the medical community. I visited the "Corner" regularly and attended many fraternity social functions.
Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
Twice I attended "buring in effigy" ceremonies in MAD Bowl and was struck by the amount of freedom students were allowed. This practice was soon censured. My general experience was that extremes of conduct were not tolerated.
Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
I was a single female at a mostly male populated University. My social experiences were full of many social, weekend dates, meeting a varied number of people. I joined a naitonal sorority, purposefully to meet other women not associated with the nursing school, so as to have other contacts of interest.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
none
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life? |
Comments on preparedness |
Absolutely. The combination of attending a women's college for my first two years and then attending a mostly male oriented University ('57-'59) gave me the challenge to understand adjustments necessary to succeed academically and socially in two different enivronments. I not only had a very post-grad career in nursing but have gone one to raise three successful daughters, support my husband's career and move 23 times.
Most significant post-UVA events |
Comments on most significant event |
1. Raising a happy family. 2. Being a corporate wife of 37 years. 3. Pursuing a real estate career of 15 year duration. 4. Moving 23 times and owning 11 homes which has exposed me to making many friends and assuming many diverse responsibilities. 5. Being president of several community organizations - church, neighborhood and arts alliance.
Personal factors that affected professional life |
Comments on personal factors |
Moving so often led me to join the real estate profession as a "seasoned" participant in the process.
Other factors affecting life after the university |
Comments on other factors |
Giving to the community and church - as a leader in the Girl Scouts, coaching girls' softball; leading educational programs in church and continuing to sing in choirs.
