Description of UVA classroom experiences
Comments on classroom experiences At first intimidating. Believe we were given top notch instruction. After 42 years still refer to the concepts taught in those class rooms.
Description of UVA professor interactions
Comments on professor interactions Strictly professional. One professor, Mrs. Ludwig, was especially helpful and encouraging to me as a young student.
Who impacted your life at UVA?
Comments on life impact Mrs. Ludwig - Gave praise for my knowledge of high school chemistry and even determined to teach me 7th grade math. She spent extra time with me and was so successful that later I taught math to LVN's in the Washington, D.C., area hospitals for Manpower Program. Dr. Finger - very challenging.
Most memorable UVA educational experience
Comments on memorable educational experience I left there very confident in my nursing education because I believed it to be the best. Soon after I left there in 1962 - was very disappointed that other hospitals did not set the same standards.

Memories of Charlottesville
Comments on Charlottesville memories The Corner was always special. Downtown was where all of the shopping was done. Miller and Rhodes and the Colonade shop were my favorite stores. Charlottesville was a quaint, lazy southern town then.
Did you feel part of UVA community? Did you feel part of community?
Incidents that caused these community feelings the college participation between 1959-1962. Attended many University activities. Husband was a member of the soccer team.
Vivid UVA memories
Comments on vivid memories An accidental meeting with William Faulkner. Definitely does not represent general experience. One fine spring evening two of my classmates and I were playing hide and seek on the Lawn. As I was hunched, hiding behind a large shrub, a gentleman who looked very familiar passed by. Said nothing but returned for a second look to make sure he was seeing correctly.
Did marital status affect UVA experiences
Comments on influence of marital status I met my husband there in the second year of nursing school. We were married in August 1959 - one month before graduating. Permission was granted by the acting dean at that time. We remained there 1959-62 while husband attended law school.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences
Comments on influence of cultural background During those years, many jokes were made about people in general who were from West Virginia. Many of those jokes were very insulting and deeply hurtful to a young person who had never been subjected to such humor (usually doctors trying to be funny).

Barriers faced in work and volunteering
Comments on barriers question Today health insurance companies have the greatest impact on our work. The American people are being cheated by their companies. When I retire I wish to become a patient advocate - especially for the psychiatric patient.

Additional comments The University was a different place in the years between 1956-1962. U.Va. as an all male school (primarily) where young men appeared in class in coat and tie had an impressiveness about it that has changed. The school was much smaller and perhaps had a greater sense of community. Male professors were very hard on females attending their classes in some cases. It's fun to ruminate about some of those situations.
