Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)? |
Comments on choice of concentration |
In my era, there weren't many choices for women. I felt a "call" to nursing over school teacher or secretary. Also I seemed to always "care" for people.
Description of UVA classroom experiences |
Comments on classroom experiences |
Very concentrated, detailed science courses, very difficult for me as I came from such a small town and schooling system.
Description of UVA professor interactions |
Comments on professor interactions |
One particular instructor, Miss Plummer, was exceptional. She taught anatomy and physiology. If she hadn't tutored me privately (at no cost to me) I would never had made it.
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
Comments on life impact |
1. Miss Plummer - as mentioned in #19.
2. Dean Margaret Tyson who interviewed me for admission and was so helpful.
3. Mary Jane Morris, instructor in nursing arts - she was everyone's idea of the "perfect nurse."
4. Betty Norman Norris, nurse in operating room - she influenced me toward surgical nursing.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
Comments on memorable educational experience |
Our class was very close-knit. The diploma program took many young (17 to 18) girls and molded them into mature women very quickly.
UVA weekend activities |
Comments on weekend activities |
In our program, we had to work a lot of weekends to cover nursing needs in the hospital. Summer weekends we could swim at Fry's Springs or go to Reynovia Lake if you could get a ride.
