Comments on college experiences
Why did you choose UVA?
Comments on choice to attend UVA Local physician in W.Va. And a friend who was a U.Va. nursing student suggested I apply.
How did you finance UVA?
Comments on financing parents
Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)?
Comments on choice of concentration In my era, there weren't many choices for women. I felt a "call" to nursing over school teacher or secretary. Also I seemed to always "care" for people.
Description of UVA classroom experiences
Comments on classroom experiences Very concentrated, detailed science courses, very difficult for me as I came from such a small town and schooling system.
Description of UVA professor interactions
Comments on professor interactions One particular instructor, Miss Plummer, was exceptional. She taught anatomy and physiology. If she hadn't tutored me privately (at no cost to me) I would never had made it.
Who impacted your life at UVA?
Comments on life impact 1. Miss Plummer - as mentioned in #19. 2. Dean Margaret Tyson who interviewed me for admission and was so helpful. 3. Mary Jane Morris, instructor in nursing arts - she was everyone's idea of the "perfect nurse." 4. Betty Norman Norris, nurse in operating room - she influenced me toward surgical nursing.
Most memorable UVA educational experience
Comments on memorable educational experience Our class was very close-knit. The diploma program took many young (17 to 18) girls and molded them into mature women very quickly.
UVA weekend activities
Comments on weekend activities In our program, we had to work a lot of weekends to cover nursing needs in the hospital. Summer weekends we could swim at Fry's Springs or go to Reynovia Lake if you could get a ride.
UVA extra-curricular organizations
Comments on extra-curricular organizations I was active in Baptist Student Union, which was in an old house, on property by University Baptist Church. In '57-'58 schol year I was the B.S.U. hostess.
Important local, state, national, and international issues while at UVA
Comments on important issues Local issue - closing public schools due to integration. I believe that was either 1957 or 1958.
How interest in issues was expressed
Comments on how interest was expressed I was just amazed that people couldn't understand that everyone was equal in God's eyes.
