The nursing program was too demanding for time to be involved in much. We worked 40 hours/week plus classes and study.

The single rooms allowed for individual schedule of work. I tried a double room once but moved after a short time. Our schedules were too different.

There was a wonderful Italian restaurant on West Main St. across from what was once [Sam?] - First Baptist Church was located at 3rd and Jefferson Streets.

Incidents that caused these community feelings |
All our classes (almost all), our residence, and many activities were in McKim Hall. Our schedules were tough.

One of my most vivid memories was the segregation at the U.Va. Hospital and the abominable condition on the black wards in the basement of the hospital. I remember the afternoon teas in McKim Hall. Very pleasant respite.

Having 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Being involved in nursing eduction and most profoundly taking a position in a college faculty. Being a founding member of the local free clinic. Traveling to Europe, Canada, Scandinavia, and Great Britain. Getting my doctorate.

Being a nurse and a woman often influenced the weight of my decisions and contributions (negatively) when I worked in a hospital. At the college I felt I had an equal voice.
