Who impacted your life at UVA?
Comments on life impact Nursing, at that time, was confining - almost entirely in the hospital and McKim Hall. We staffed the hospital plus going to class thus leaving very little time for other interests.
Most memorable UVA educational experience
Comments on memorable educational experience An eye-opener as I began my entire college experience at the age of 16 1/2 years! I found that my high school had not really prepared me for college.
UVA weekend activities
Comments on weekend activities Usually on duty - sometimes at Fry's Springs swimming. Going to movies. Attending some dances at U.Va., i.e. "mid-winters," "Easters"
UVA extra-curricular organizations
Comments on extra-curricular organizations None - confined mostly to McKim Hall and class activities which were few.
Important local, state, national, and international issues while at UVA
Comments on important issues National elections, nursing issues.

Comments on how interest was expressed Voted - otherwise nothing. Our lives were tightly regulated by the hospital as a student nurse.
UVA housing
Comments on housing dorm; 3 months public health experience in Stafford Co.
Likes and dislikes about housing
Comments on likes and dislikes McKim was okay - rules were quite rigid.
Where were meals eaten
Comments on meal location hospital most of the time - could rarely afford eating elsewhere

Interaction detail We were not allowed to nor encouraged to spend much time outside our medical domain.
Memories of Charlottesville
Comments on Charlottesville memories Could walk anywhere at anytime - safety! Town entertainment - movies. Church - usually where you met "town" people.
Did you feel part of UVA community? Did you feel part of community?
Incidents that caused these community feelings Too confined to McKim and hospital. All-male university.

Comments on influence of marital status none
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences
Comments on influence of cultural background none
Did UVA prepare you for post-UVA life?
Comments on preparedness Not really. Felt we should have been better prepared for entering the "working" world, i.e. financial guidance - encouragement to advance our education.
Most significant post-UVA events
Comments on most significant event Marriage, children, divorce, continuing (for 40 years) to work as a nurse - probably should have gone to school for additional degree in another field.

Do you think of yourself as a career woman?
Comments on career woman question Only of necessity.
Barriers faced in work and volunteering
Comments on barriers question Wishing to do bedside nursing instead of administrative work has kept the salary low. Hospital dictates too much of our work lives. We have little say re: decisions made in department.

Additional comments Am delighted that female students are as much a part of the system as the males! Feel that students, today, are better prepared to enter the work force and advance. Too - students can participate in community activities, hold jobs and feel a part of the town.
