Description of UVA classroom experiences |
|
Comments on classroom experiences |
Old fashioned. However at the time I loved and enjoyed being a student at the University. All memories are mostly positive. Only one negative - class in child growth and development - my one and only experience with sexist.
|
Description of UVA professor interactions |
|
Comments on professor interactions |
Most faculty - student interactions were formal. As a student I felt great respect and mutually respected throughout the entire experience. One professor (cannot remember name - child growth and development) seemed very unhappy with having to teach women (student nurses at that time were all women).
|
Who impacted your life at UVA? |
|
Comments on life impact |
Zula Mae Baber Bice - Professor of Medicine and surgical nursing. Anne Hemmings - Nursing arts professor. Mary Jane Morris - supervisor of psychiatric nursing - nursing instructor at various intervals. All these women were oustanding professonal role models with good character.

Comments on memorable educational experience |
Joyfully challenging. Very "civilized" time and felt confident at graduation in skills and poised with good patient professional rapport. M-F afternoon teas at McKim - living room musical sessions around the piano and 88 Keys jazz group. Highlight of a lifetime! - 1957 William Faulkner afternoon "chats" with author regarding his characters.

|
Comments on barriers question |
No real barriers - I have been aware of the change here since being a student, leaving for 20 years then returning to a different environment. (Returned in 1980 to work at the medical center. However I was comfortable with the changes as they happened over my lifetime)

Very involved with "full time" employment. However the women's faculty and professional staff organization meets in the midday on Tuesday. Impossible for me to get away from the medical center at the time they meet. Wish there were an evening group so that one could participate.

Additional comments |
Medical Center primary experience - as a 60+ year old the experience of being once again in the workplace in which I spent my years of primary education is for me a great joy. For instance in 1954-1958 clinical education was at the beginning of the technical advances in medicine/surgery that we so richly enjoy. Research was done in the hospital setting that set the stage for open heart surgery - vascular surgery - transplant surgery. For the past 18 years ultra sound diagnostic vascular investigation has been 40 hour plus occupation. One continues to grow and learn at the University of Virginia. I consider it a joy and an honor to watch and be a part of "My University" as it continued to become a world class institution in the medical field as in other fields. Having this historic university as a workplace and to live here and walk through the Lawn and enjoy the total environment is a joy and a priviledge.
As a student nurse in the 1950s I felt this same respect - times were different then - the status of women was different. However it seems I grew with the changes and enjoy the new University that many take for granted.
