Description of UVA classroom experiences |
|
Comments on classroom experiences |
Our classes were taught by doctors at the hosp. We were very serious about learning to be good nurses. There were no men in our classes. Some classes were taught by nurses, the "how to do it" ones.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
I admired the teachers for knowing what they were talking about. I felt trust in their ethics and what we were trying to learn to do for people. I lost confidence in my ability to do it, but I planned to return after I got married in 1954.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
In the first summer school I thought I would learn to be a wonderful nurse who didn't make mistakes. By the end of the second summer I had lost confidence and worried a lot that I would make a terrible mistake. One day several of us were standing around a man's bed while the head nurse explained about his abdominal incision. I looked at his face and thought he looked scared. I took his hand and gave him a little smile. Later the head nurse complimented me for remembering he was a person. Her compliment encouraged me to keep trying and has always meant a lot to me.

One of the older nurses started having tea with Ritz crackers in the living room at McKim Hall. She did this in the late afternoon. We sat, drank our tea, and visited with her. This helped us feel calmer and happier. I think one of the hardest things about teaching nursing is to impress on people the need to be careful without destroying their confidence.
