Additional comments Nursing school at U.Va. in 1955, when I was a student, probably bears no resemblance to the nursing school of today. We worked a 44 hour week in the hospital, including day, night, and weekends - in addition to our class time and study time. We were routinely in charge of a floor of around 40 patients, often with no assistant. In those days there were no intensive care units and many of these patients would be criticially ill. We used to remind one another that if we could make it through that program we would be prepared for anything. There was some truth to that; we were exposed to staggering slice of life.
