Vivid UVA memories |
Comments on vivid memories |
March 18, 1950- when I met my husband he was a student at U.Va. We went to the boxing matches with Catholic U. Later we went to his fraternity house. My curfew was 11:45 pm. This, of course, was not my general experience, although we dated for the next 1 1/2 years until I graduated. My husband graduated in 1952 and we were married in the Chapel- he was a 2nd Lt. and was sent to Korea.

Did marital status affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of marital status |
I wasn't married so I can't compare experiences. We weren't allowed to be married. Being unmarried- gave freedom and being personally responsible for my own decisions.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
Comments on influence of cultural background |
I was a Caucasion Christian female as were all of my classmates. There was no diversity and I never experienced any thoughts on subject. Coming from a "protected" home environment and small town could have been overwhelming, but I don't recall any conflict. Whenever I was unsure of the unknown I just avoided the situations.

Additional comments |
When I came to the Univ., McKim Hall on Sept. 13, 1948, I was a 17 year old high school graduate. When I left 3 years later at the end of August, 1951, I was a 20 year old U.Va. hospital school and nursing graduate. In the intervening years I found a life that life was founded on and an undaunted sense of responsibility- to myself, my family, my professors, and to my God. This has carried me forward since that time. There were so many "firsts." First day of class, first day to wear a uniform, first patient, first relief duty, first night duty, first in my class to go to the OR, first scrub, first delivery, first day to wear cap, and finally as a senior, first day to wear white hose and shoes. The first autopsy we viewed was a young mother who suffered a blood clot during delivery. I was surprised that it became so readily impersonal. Like seeing a movie. We also viewed another time a baby born without a skull who also did not survive. My feelings were not so much impersonal as helplessness. My instructors were very helpful and encouraging. Especially like the anatomy instructor (Alice Darner)- a no-nonsense person and very fair. I nearly fainted once when looking up from notes. I looked directly into a skeleton, she had pulled it out of the closet while I was writing. Finally I found my later husband there at U.Va., and now 46 yrs. of marriage, I owe U.Va. much. The wonderful flashback memories I have of U.Va. will never leave me. My friends in my class are very important to me, even now.
