My classmates first and foremost- they have remained lifelong friends. Mary Jane Morris- my psych supervisor and mentor was most influential and directed me toward my career choice of psychiatric nursing.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
The thoroughness of the curriculum and the intensive nursing experiences we met almost everyday. We were "hands-on" students when we were ready for graduation we could handle a unit. We were able to function on our own and were self-confident because we had already faced the ordinary nursing problems that occur on a busy unit.We staffed the hospital.

Memories of Charlottesville |
|
Comments on Charlottesville memories |
Very little suburban sprawl. Most students lived in dorms. Married students lived on Copely Hill. Many veterans (WWII) made up the student body. Very few women students (mostly Ed. grad students). We made up the biggest number of females around. It was a grand situation.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
There was a big snow on a dance weekend. No "imports" (girls from out of town colleges) could get to C-ville. A friend called from a fraternity and asked if I could find about 15 girls to come to a party that night at their fraternity house. It took a bit of doing, but the challenge was met. All the "less-than-perfect" nursing students went to the party and a great time was had by all. I got a thank you note from the president of the fraternity. I had learned to be resourceful.

Additional comments |
I am and always have been proud to be a graduate of U.Va Hospital School of Nursing. I feel that my education at U.Va. Hospital was equal or better than that from any other hospital or university program. This was apparent when I graduated in 1951 and remained so throughout my career. Something was instilled into us that didn't go away. We felt special, confident, and competent to face any nursing situation that came up.
