Comments on college experiences
Why did you choose UVA?
Comments on choice to attend UVA Last 6 months of training I was sent to Army hospital in Richmond. I had visited U.Va., wanted to further my education. Had to earn it-thus got a job at the hospital and went to U.Va.
How did you finance UVA?
Comments on financing I worked as head nurse on South 4 @ U.Va. ( an [orth?] & [opth?] wing at that time).
Why did you choose your UVA concentration(s)?
Comments on choice of concentration Always wanted to be a nurse. This opportunity came open and I was selected as head nurse. I did like both opth. and orth.
Description of UVA classroom experiences
Comments on classroom experiences I was usually the one girl in my classes. eg. Biology lab- 28 boys and me. Public speaking class-38 boys and me. European History- 36 boys, 2 girls. It was a test of courage, but other students very respectful.
Description of UVA professor interactions
Comments on professor interactions I had only 2 profs. at Univ. who were in nursing. They were Louise Oates & Lois Austin- a teacher/pupil relationship in classroom- no outside interaction. All the rest of the profs. were men and in the Dept. of Ed. There was no outside classroom interaction.
Who impacted your life at UVA?
Comments on life impact the nursing director at the hospital, Miss Roy Beasley whom I worked under, I greatly admired and loved
Most memorable UVA educational experience
Comments on memorable educational experience This is some 50 yrs ago- all the courses in the nursing curriculum seemed like a review. The ones I particularly liked were Sociology, Criminology, Biology. The most vivid memory is of the beautiful library, we were able to go into stack and read all day if you wished to. I loved to read and never seemed to have any books. Here i found more than I could read.
UVA weekend activities
Comments on weekend activities Working extra hours so I had time for class during weekdays and I always attended the football games.
UVA extra-curricular organizations
Comments on extra-curricular organizations There were no extra curricular activities for women when I attended U.Va. We were not even allowed in the swimming pool. No significant.

Comments on important issues I was interested in how the land was being divided after WWII.

Interaction detail I had friends and met in town and would baby sit their kids so they could go out.
Memories of Charlottesville
Comments on Charlottesville memories It was a beautiful little town, had a RR in it so I could catch the train and go to Washington and get home, several nice shopping areas. I bought my wedding clothes there except dress-got my engagement ring at Keller & George's, etc
Did you feel part of UVA community? Did you feel part of community?
Incidents that caused these community feelings I was there 5 years and young when I arrived. My first working experience away from home. I felt responsible for my patients and students, and I felt South 4 was my domain. I was boss for first time and only 22 yrs.
Vivid UVA memories
Comments on vivid memories A pleasant memory- the chief of the opth. dept. was introducing me to a new resident and he said "now this young lady is our finest nurse-the best we've ever had in this dept." This does represent my general experience of U.Va.- I had very positive feedback and experiences during my career.
Did marital status affect UVA experiences
Comments on influence of marital status I worked at the U.Va. hospital before I was married and left after I was married. I was 7 months pregnant when I left my South 4 ward. Also was in U.Va. Ed. dept. before I was married and graduated 1 yr. after I was married.
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences
Comments on influence of cultural background I was completely unaware of this being a problem at the time I was employed. I was from the North and my last name was Jacobs. I was a graduate RN, but was placed in a basement room with students-all students. One Sunday I came in from church and one of the housemothers said "you attended church? I thought you were Jewish." I said "no, I've always been a Christian and my family are German and Protestant. The next week I was called to Mrs. Beasley's office and offered a suite where the other head nurses lived. I refused, I was already 3.5 years in my room in the basement.

Additional comments Fact #1: This may be of no significance except to me. The cafeteria at U.Va. hospital used to serve the best food, cooked that day and served by some of the same people. To young, hungry girls, this was indeed a blessing and the room and food was free if you worked at the U.Va. Also, we were encouraged to walk across the street and take classes as many as you wanted, if you maintained a "B" the hospital paid. I never paid a single penny for my education at U.Va. they gave me 1 year of credit for my 3 years of training (RN) and I worked and finally got down to needing 1 full year. You had to have 1 full year (not part time) to graduate-I took even my full year working also. In the 5 years I spent at U.Va. I was fed, housed, and attended U.Va., graduated with BS of nurses Ed. in 1951. What a wonderful opportunity for someone arriving there with probably $30-$35. Fact #2: My husband and I graduated in the same ceremony in 1951 and have been told we were the first married couple to graduate in the same ceremony.
