Last 6 months of training I was sent to Army hospital in Richmond. I had visited U.Va., wanted to further my education. Had to earn it-thus got a job at the hospital and went to U.Va.

Description of UVA classroom experiences |
|
Comments on classroom experiences |
I was usually the one girl in my classes. eg. Biology lab- 28 boys and me. Public speaking class-38 boys and me. European History- 36 boys, 2 girls. It was a test of courage, but other students very respectful.

Comments on professor interactions |
I had only 2 profs. at Univ. who were in nursing. They were Louise Oates & Lois Austin- a teacher/pupil relationship in classroom- no outside interaction. All the rest of the profs. were men and in the Dept. of Ed. There was no outside classroom interaction.

Most memorable UVA educational experience |
|
Comments on memorable educational experience |
This is some 50 yrs ago- all the courses in the nursing curriculum seemed like a review. The ones I particularly liked were Sociology, Criminology, Biology. The most vivid memory is of the beautiful library, we were able to go into stack and read all day if you wished to. I loved to read and never seemed to have any books. Here i found more than I could read.

Vivid UVA memories |
|
Comments on vivid memories |
A pleasant memory- the chief of the opth. dept. was introducing me to a new resident and he said "now this young lady is our finest nurse-the best we've ever had in this dept." This does represent my general experience of U.Va.- I had very positive feedback and experiences during my career.

Comments on influence of marital status |

|
Did cultural background affect UVA experiences |
|
Comments on influence of cultural background |
I was completely unaware of this being a problem at the time I was employed. I was from the North and my last name was Jacobs. I was a graduate RN, but was placed in a basement room with students-all students. One Sunday I came in from church and one of the housemothers said "you attended church? I thought you were Jewish." I said "no, I've always been a Christian and my family are German and Protestant. The next week I was called to Mrs. Beasley's office and offered a suite where the other head nurses lived. I refused, I was already 3.5 years in my room in the basement.

Fact #1: This may be of no significance except to me. The cafeteria at U.Va. hospital used to serve the best food, cooked that day and served by some of the same people. To young, hungry girls, this was indeed a blessing and the room and food was free if you worked at the U.Va. Also, we were encouraged to walk across the street and take classes as many as you wanted, if you maintained a "B" the hospital paid. I never paid a single penny for my education at U.Va. they gave me 1 year of credit for my 3 years of training (RN) and I worked and finally got down to needing 1 full year. You had to have 1 full year (not part time) to graduate-I took even my full year working also. In the 5 years I spent at U.Va. I was fed, housed, and attended U.Va., graduated with BS of nurses Ed. in 1951. What a wonderful opportunity for someone arriving there with probably $30-$35. Fact #2: My husband and I graduated in the same ceremony in 1951 and have been told we were the first married couple to graduate in the same ceremony.
